Tanker saved boat crew

Tue Jun 18 12:42:18 CEST 2019 Timsen

The "Ardmore Sealifter" rescued a Toronto man and his crew on June 13, 2019, when stormy weather forced them to abandon the "Boundless", a 38-foot cutter. None of the four people on board was injured. The boat set sail from Baddeck, N.S. on June 5 with the aim of reaching the south coast of Portugal, a 6,600 kilometre trip, a month later. About 600 kilometres east of New York City, the "Boundless" encountered strong winds and waves about six metres high. A wave hit the boat in a fashion that snapped the aluminium rudder which was then parallel to the surface of the water. The skipper Geoff Fairbank and the crew, which includes Neil Hetherington, Marty Cameron and Alan Dalquen, sent out a MayDay. The "Ardmore Sealifter", about 30 kilometres south of the boat, changed course and the captain turned the tanker to make it parallel with the sailboat. Then a ladder rope was dropped down about 12 metres. Shortly after that, the mast of the boat hit the hull of the tanker and was snapped. But all of the crew were taken off safely. The "Boundless" was lost at sea. The tanker which had sailed from Castellon, entered the port of New York on June 18.
