Eight perpetrators and one crew member arrested after attempt to steal cargo from towed barge
On April 19, 2022, the master of the 'Asia Jaya 28', en route to Port Kelang, reported to the Singapore VIS that two unauthorised persons were sighted escaping from the towed barge 'Sinar Asia 2912' in the Malacca Stait in pos. 1° 12.51’ N 103° 51.68’ E. A safety navigational broadcast was issued. The RSN’s MSTF and Singapore Police Coast Guard were notified. A boat of the Singapore Police Coast Guard intercepted the tug and barge and conducted a search on board. Eight perpetrators and one crew member, alleged to have conspired with the perpetrators to steal the scrap metal on board the barge, were arrested. Two other perpetrators had escaped.
Barge towed by tug robbed by perpetrators
The Malaysian flagged barge "Sinar Jaya 2912", while being towed by the "Asia Jaya 28", was boarded by an unknown number of perpetrators on May 30, 2019, at 10.30 p.m. in position 01 13 25 N, 103 32 45 E, in the westbound lane of the Singapore Strait. They stole several tools from the barge and escaped in a small craft. The master of the tug reported the incident to the Singapore authorities.
