Tanker sank during sinkex

Sat May 11 13:09:25 CEST 2024 Timsen

US and Philippine forces sank the decommissioned BRP 'Lake Carilya' of the Philippine Navy on May 8, 0224, at 10.50 a.m. LT during a sinkex simulating an attack on an enemy vessel near the city of Laoag, around 400 kilometers south of Taiwan. The tanker slowly dipped below the 1000 ft deep water after being struck by waves of anti-ship missiles, rockets, cannon fire and land-based artillery off Laoag. At around 8:30 a.m., a Philippine Navy’s Fast Attack Interdictor Craft (FAIC) fired a spike-non-line-of-sight missile targeting the superstructure of the mock enemy ship. After the naval attack, the Philippine Air Force utilized its AW-109 attack helicopters targeting the mock enemy vessel with rockets and guns. This was followed by the firing of C-Star missiles by one of the Philippine Navy frigates, the BRP 'Jose Rizal'. Complementing the missile strike were other naval and aerial assets participating in the simulated attack on the target ship. Former Navy ship to be sunk in May

Wed Mar 20 11:53:48 CET 2024 Timsen

The Philippines and the United States will sink the BRP 'Lake Calivara' off the coast of Laoag in Ilocos Norte, the northernmost mainland province in the country, which is relatively near Taiwan. The coastal area in La Paz village was chosen to be the venue of the sinking exercise in May 2024 due to its strategic location. The west coast area in La Paz is the most suitable for an exercise of this magnitude, it was said on March 20, 2024. The BRP 'Lake Caliraya' is a decommissioned Navy vessel. In July 2023, the ship ran aground off Bataan, but an American contractor retrieved it to be used for this exercise. A day before it ran aground, it was supposed to be used as a mock target for a bilateral marine exercise of Manila and Washington, but the drills were canceled then due to inclement weather.
