Fire on deck of bulkcarrier in Valletta

A cherry picker on the deck of the "Cape Tavor" caught fire at the China Dock No 6 at the Palumbo Shipyards in the Grand Harbour of Valetta on June 9, 2014, at around 4 p.m. LT. Personnel of the Civil Protection Department were called to the site. They dispatched five teams, and the situation was under control after a couple of hours. There was a great deal of smoke caused by the burning of the cherry picker’s heavy rubber tires. The crew of the "Cape Tavor" was using the machine. No repair work was being conducted in the vessel’s hold at the time. While the fire was put out, while one firefighter was slightly injured. The man was transferred to Mater Dei Hospital suffering from back pain. The repair work aboard the ship was not affected. The bulkcarrier had come into port on June 5.
