Tanker called NSRI for patient assistance and assisted itself in medevac from a trawler

Thu Nov 23 10:10:10 CET 2017 Timsen

On Nov 22, 2017, at 8 a.m. the NSRI Port Elizabeth duty crew, accompanied by two EC Government Health EMS rescue paramedics, launched the sea rescue craft "Spirit of Toft" to respond to rendezvous with the tanker "Caribbean Glory" in Algoa Bay, following a request for medical assistance for a crewman reportedly suffering hypertension. It was released from the call after the ship's medical crew confirmed that the crewman’s blood pressure had returned to normal following medication. The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) then diverted the boat to rendezvous with the fishing trawler "Ubuntu" following a request for medical assistance reporting a 50 year old Cape Town crew member suffering breathing difficulties onboard six nautical miles off Cape Recife. The sea rescue craft "Spirit of Toft" was launched at 08.24 a.m. and on arrival on the scene, in unfavourable sea conditions with a five meter swell, there were difficulties to get alongside the fishing trawler. The "Caribbean Glory" was still nearby at the time and was requested to come alongside the rescue operation to create a lee. The "Caribbean Glory" was happy to assist and with the lee created, the RNLI crew was able to carry out the patient evacuation off the fishing trawler. Rescue paramedics treated the patient who was brought aboard the "Spirit of Toft" to the sea rescue base and then transported to hospital in a stable condition by EMS ambulance. The "Caribbean Glory" was thanked for the assistance. Report with photos: http://www.nsri.org.za/2017/11/patient-evacuation-off-fishing-trawler/
