Patrol ship docked due to ongoing problems

Thu Dec 15 10:23:02 CET 2022 Timsen

The 'HMCS Harry Dewolf', which had been forced to abandon a mission due to a mechanical breakdown in which one of its four main diesel generators was inoperable on Aug 17, will be out of service until April 2023, because of ongoing mechanical problems. The National Defence is now conducting a technical investigation to try to figure out the problem, and repairs will be made at the taxpayer?s expense. The investigation will also look at whether the problem, which could be linked to an engine cooling system, might affect two other Arctic and offshore patrol ships, the HMCS 'Max Bernays' and 'HMCS Margaret Brooke'. On Nov 23, the HMCS 'Harry Dewolf' was docked in Halifax to deal with problems with the bow thruster.

Leak in coolant system behind generator failure

Thu Sep 08 12:20:55 CEST 2022 Timsen

A leak in the coolant system of two diesel generators was the reason the HMCS 'Harry DeWolf' has been unable to travel to the North. The issues continued to be investigated and rectified. The ship was scheduled to join Operation Nanook, the Canadian Armed Forces’ yearly military operation in the North. The first of four generators in the ship failed before it set out for the North, but it was still able to travel with three generators. However, once the ship set out and the second generator failed due to the same coolant issue it had to return to Halifax. As a part of the investigation, all four diesel generators will be inspected. Part of the work involves determining whether there is a foundational issue with the ship to address. There was no timeline for the repairs, but at this point it was expected the HMCS 'Harry DeWolf' will be ready when needed for future operations.

Mechanical breakdown sidelines ship

Sun Sep 04 12:06:40 CEST 2022 Timsen

The HMCS 'Harry Dewolf', en route to join operation Nanook, was forced to abandon a mission due to a mechanical breakdown making one of its four main diesel generators inoperable. Several days later, another of the main diesel generators failed. Technicians found in Halifax that a coolant leak in the two diesel generators had caused the problems. The vessel will enter a pre-scheduled maintenance period that will run until the end of October, and repairs to the generators will be done. The vessel is expected back to conduct force generation activities in November and early December.
