53 migrants repatriated to Dominican Republic
The 'Joseph Napier' repatriated 53 migrants to the Dominican Republic on Jan 12 following the interdiction of an overloaded makeshift vessel in Mona Passage waters off the western coast of Puerto Rico. The migrants were transferred to a Dominican Republic Navy vessel just off Punta Cana. During a night patrol on Jan 10, a Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine multirole enforcement aircraft had detected a suspect vessel in Mona Passage waters just off Playa Buye in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector San Juan diverted the 'Joseph Napier' and notified Puerto Rico Police Joint Forces of Rapid Action (FURA) boat stations in the area that responded to intercept the grossly overloaded vessel. As the Coast Guard Cutter arrived on scene, two responding FURA marine units stopped the makeshift vessel. The 'Joseph NapierÄ embarked 53 migrants, including 46 men of which 36 claimed to be Dominican Republic nationals and 10 others claimed to be Haitian. Nine migrants rescued after boat sank
The 'Joseph Napier' and a unit from the Dominican Republic Navy combined efforts to rescue nine migrants from an unseaworthy vessel that sank near the coast of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic on Jan 3, 2024. A Coast Guard HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircrew notified Coast Guard Sector San Juan watchstanders of the boat at approximately 8 p.m., roughly 40 miles offshore. The aircrew reported that the vessel appeared to be in distress with an unknown number of people in the water. Watchstanders diverted the 'Joseph Napier' and notified the Dominican Republic Navy, which launched a maritime asset to assist in the response. The 'Joseph Napier' recovered all nine people in the water. After conducting interviews with the survivors, the crew determined that all people from the migrant boat were accounted for. Several of the survivors suffered chemical burn from exposure to the sinking vessel’s fuel in the water. The 'Joseph Napier' transferred the migrants to the Dominican Republic Navy vessel, which brought them to shore in the Dominican Republic for repatriation and further medical evaluation.
