Allision in Cleveland

Mon Jun 14 11:43:33 CEST 2021 Timsen

The Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Cleveland started investigating an allision between the USS 'Cod', a submarine which has sat on Cleveland’s lakefront since it first arrived in 1959, and the 'Morro Bay' on June 13, 2021, at approximately 11:30 a.m. The USS 'Cod' was being towed by the m/v 'Manitou' when it allided with the moored USCGC 'Morro Bay' in the port of Cleveland. The accident caused superficial damage to the hull and superstructure of the Coast Guard Cutter. The USS 'Cpd' was scheduled to be towed from its homeport in Cleveland to Erie, Pennsylvania, for maintenance.

Cutter suffered rudder casualty

Sat Apr 05 18:08:39 CEST 2014 Timsen

The "Morro Bay", being moored in Duluth, was scheduled to undergo an in-water repair on Apr 6 and 7, 2014. The "Morro Bay" suffered a rudder casualty while conducting ice-breaking operations in Thunder Bay, Ontario, on Mar 27, and was towed to Duluth by the Coast Guard Cutters Alder and Katmai Bay. Divers and Coast Guard naval engineers examined the "Morro Bay" and discovered that ice-breaking operations exacerbated an unknown, preexisting problem with several bolts that fasten the cutter's rudder to the rudder post. The problem ultimately resulted in the loss of five out of six bolts that hold the rudder in place. Naval engineers have continued to examine the data to effect repairs and ultimately determine the root cause. If repairs go as expected, the cutter was expected to be back underway immediately to resume ice breaking on the Great Lakes.
