Trawler sank as artificial reef

Mon May 20 13:38:10 CEST 2019 Timsen

The Underwater Park of Las Grutas has got a new disused vessel with the sinking of the "Chiarpesca" which was placed between 18 meters deep at low tide and about 22 meters during the high tide and at a distance of seven kilometers from the beach of Las Grutas where it will remain next to the "Don Félix" and "Marina Rojamar" which already became part of the park and are visited by divers of different levels. The project seeks to create a park of artificial reefs that will enhance the development of diving activity, initiated in the region at the end of the 90s. It is in charge of the company Cota Cero, the salvage and diving company El Austral, in conjunction with the Government of Río Negro and different institutions of the area. The "Chiarpesca" was the third of the four ships that it is planned to submerge during the first stage of building of the artificial reef of the Underwater Park that once finished will become the largest in South America. The initiative was declared of national tourist interest and by the province of Río Negro. The wreck will allow novice divers to dive from bow to stern without greater risks with a height difference of no more than four meters. In addition, the ship was left with the propeller and the rudder intact.
