Tug caused oil spill

Wed Feb 03 11:32:28 CET 2016 Timsen

Crews were working to clean up an oil spill caused by the "Cindy L. Erickson" on the Illinois River near Spring Valley on Feb 1, 2016 around 7:30 p.m. The Bureau County Emergency Management Agency was notified of a waste oil spill just south of the Route 89 Bridge. Because of dense fog and limited visibility at the time, the agency called for help from the Peru Rescue Station, which responded to the Spring Valley Boat Club and launched boats to survey the scene. It was then determined that the tug had released approximately 25 gallons of waste oil. The vessel crew had already deployed spill control kits and contained the product. The tug was secured to pilings at the time. The owner of the tug, the Marquette Transportation, responded to the scene and notified a private spill cleanup team, which deployed hard booms with help from Peru Rescue Station boats. It was determined that the scene was secure and no product had been released downstream. Cleanup efforts continued in the morning of Feb 2 and representatives remained on scene to supervise the response.
