Lower Mississippi River has been reopened

The Lower Mississippi River has been reopened to vessel traffic from mile marker 771 to mile marker 767 on Nov 23. Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi River reported that all barges have been secured after the "Cooperative Enterprise" had 42 barges break away. The cause of the incident was under investigation.

The Mississippi has been reopened for restricted vessel traffic after a barge breakaway lead the U.S. Coast Guard to close the section from mile marker 771 to mile marker 750 approximately 20 miles north of Memphis on Nov 19, 2016. The "Cooperative Enterprise" was towing 42 barges containing corn or soybeans when they broke away. So far 38 barges have been secured, and four grounded barges are waiting to be lightered which is restricting the waterway, Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi River reported. The area was open to one-way traffic to down-bound vessels. There have been no reported injuries, pollution or environmental impact. The cause of the incident is under investigation.

After a bargetrain with 42 of barges broke apart, sending debris all across the Mississippi River near Memphis on Nov 19, 2016. The Coast Guard blocked off parts of the river from mile marker 771 to mile marker 750, approximately 20 miles north of Memphis, Tennesseeto traffic while clearing the barges from the water with the tugs "Joe Ellis" and "Cheryl". 26 barges were still aground.
