Crew member arrested due to suspected rape
After the "Costa Naoromantica" berthed at Port Louis in the afternoon of March 17, 2017, one of its 600 crew members was arrested by police officers of the departmental security which were on the quay at the arrival of the ship. The Nepalese national was suspected of a rape perpetrated during a previous stopover in Marseilles. A complaint was lodged with the public prosecutor's office in Agen which opened a judicial investigation entrusted to an investigating judge. Believing that the evidence in his possession was sufficiently serious and consistent, the investigating magistrate issued an arrest warrant against the man. The Nepalese was taken to the courthouse of Champ Fleuri to be placed under arrest warrant. He was incarcerated while awaiting his transfer by aircraft to Agen.
Costa Cruises Sending Fifth Ship to Asia
The Costa Group has announced that starting in April 2017 its 56,000 ton Costa neoRomantica will be based in Asia year-round. Costa neoRomantica will be the fifth Costa ship deployed regularly in Asia and operated by the Costa Asia brand.
Cruise ship damaged in storm
The "Costa NeoRomantica" had to abort its cruise after having encountered a heavy storm off Sardinia and suffering hull damage at the bow and losing one anchor on Mar 5, 2015. The ship was enroute from Trapani to Marseille but was forced to return due to the damage. Some cabins were flooded 30 centimeters high by broken pipes of the air conditioning, and the ship was eventually joined by an ocean tug to Savona. Some panicked passengers were crying, some had already donned their life jackets. There were 933 passengers on board. Safety was not affected at any point. The ship had changed course due to winds of 11 Beaufort and was passing Sardinia on the east side instead of the west side as planned. However, on its way it had to battle waves with a height of 6-7 meters and 60 knots wind force. After the scheduled call at Marseille was cancelled due to the damage, the following stay in Savona starting on Mar 6 at 8 a.m. was extended for the necessary repairs. The passengers were taken to Marseille with coaches. On Mar 7 at 8 p.m. the ship sailed again bound for Kalamata with an ETA of Mar 10. The missing anchor had to be replaced in the near future due to its safety relevance. Costa stated that the safety of the passengers had never been endangered.
