Ship under tow after rire in engine room

Tue Mar 17 09:48:12 CET 2026 Timsen

An engine room fire on board the 'Diezeborg', enroute from Setubal to Kokkola with a cargo of zinc concentrate, triggered a rescue operation northwest of Gotska Sandön on the night of Feb 13, 2026. The ship's automatic extinguishing system was activated, and the crew was later able to bring the situation under control. Nine people were on board and no injuries have been reported. Ships and helicopters from the Coast Guard were mobilized to the position. Nearby were ships such as the 'Prima Lady' from the Prima Shipping Group and the 'Marjatta' from the Langh Group. On Feb 16, the ship was NUC in pos. 58° 36' N 019° 58' E. The patrol vessel 'KBV 002- Triton' (IMO 9380453 ) had taken the ship in tow and prevented it from running aground aground at Kopparstenarna, a shallow area directly north of Gotska Sandön. With the current direction and speed, the ship could have run aground before this assistance would have arrived. The situation at the position, however, was under control. Conditions were favourable for the ongoing operation, with moderate winds, a wave height of approximately 1.5 meters and clear visibility. The tug 'Svend' (IMO: 8406157) was ordered to assist by the shipping company Wagenborg on Feb 15, and arrived at the 'Diezeborg' on Feb 16. The tow of the 'Diezeborg' started at around 1 p.m. by the 'Svend'. The Coast Guard has concluded its operation when the tug arrived at the scene and took over the towing to the Tallinn Shipyard in the Bekker Port, where it was berthed on Feb 17 for repairs and remained stationary as of March 17.
