Ferry hard aground

The "Dumai Line 3" ran aground on a beach of Pulau Pedang Island in the Malacca Strait in the afternoon of Nov 15, 2016, at 1.30 p.m. near Sekodi Village in the Bengkalis district. The ferry had sailed from Batam to Selatpanjang with calls at Bengkalis and Dumai. She headed towards the waters of the Strait of Bengkalis near the village of Sekodi when she ran hard aground on a sand bank. All passengers were safely evacuated and transferred onto the "Dumai Line 19" to continue the journey. They had to walk a few meters through the shallow water to board the lifeboat and an assisting speedboat of the Air Police Unit. Then the passengers were transported by a speedboat belonging to the community to the "Dumai Line 19" which was waiting in the waters nearby. At 4.30 p.m. the evacuation was still going on. It was hoped to get the grounded ferry off with the high tide at night.
