Wheelhouse crushed in bridge allision

Fri Jan 05 18:02:59 CET 2018 Timsen

On Jan 5, 2018, short past noon the "Eben Haezer", 1059 ts (EU-No.: 02312114), allided with the railway bridge spanning the Rhine-Herne-Canal in Herne/Recklinghausen. The master did not lower the wheelhouse enough, and it hit against the bridge. It was torn off and pushed onto the ship's aft, also a car stored on deck was damaged. No one was injured. The bridge also suffered some damage and was closed for railway traffic. Also the canal was barred for ship traffic as debris of the wheelhouse were resting on the bottom of the waterway. The master managed to get the ship to a quay in the midday hours. The barge berthed in Werkendam on Jan 9 at 5.30 p.m. and left port after repairs on Jan 27 at 9.30 a.m. and headed to Rotterdam where she berthed at the RST Shortsea Container Terminal North on Jan 31 at 4.20 p.m. German reports with photos: https://www.derwesten.de/staedte/bochum/schon-wieder-kracht-ein-schiff-in-bruecke-ueber-rhein-herne-kanal-ist-das-hochwasser-schuld-id213023357.html https://www.waz.de/staedte/herne-wanne-eickel/binnenschiff-rammt-brueckenpfeiler-im-rhein-herne-kanal-id213021777.html
