Superyacht tore off control booth of bridge

Mon Dec 16 19:33:58 CET 2019 Timsen

The 'Ecstasea', upon entering the Simpson Bay Lagoon, Sint Maarten, on Dec 15, 2019, was caught by adverse wind and strong currents and veered to starboards side while passing the Simpson Bay Bridge. The superyacht allided with the control booth of the bridge during the opening at 3 p.m. A huge observation platform on the bow of the 'Ecstasea' tore through the structure, and almost all of the booth broke off and fell into the water below. No one was harmed during the incident as the bridge operator managed to jump out of the booth just prior to impact. The bridge continued to remain fully functional, as the controls were not damaged during the accident and remained fully operational. The yacht has sustained minimal damage. Port personnel carried out an assessment and a report will be produced by the local Coastguard and police to provide further clarity on the situation.
