Oil spill off Port Harcourt
An oil spill that occurred from the FPSO 'Egina' on Nov 15, 2023, was under control, and clean-up measures were being undertaken 130 kilometres south of Port Harcourt. It was believed some 3,000 barrels of crude spilled into the sea. The clean up operation by the National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) was ongoing. The spill, while not a minor one, has not reached the coastline, due to the effectiveness of the spills contingency plan they deployed. The NOSDRA immediately deployed high-level personnel as well as activating the National Oil Spills Contingency Plan to contain the spill. Other oil companies have assisted in the effort of containing and cleaning the oil spill. Aircraft have been deployed and at least five vessels have taken part in the oil abatement process, using 15,000 litres of liquids to clean the affected area. The 'Egina' is Located approximately 20 kilometers away from the Akpo field and lies within the oil mining lease block (OML) 130 and covers an area of around 500 square miles.
