All cattle to be slaughtered

Mon Mar 22 20:58:21 CET 2021 Timsen

On March 21, the Spanish government ordered the slaughter of 1,610 cattle which have been stuck aboard the 'Elbeik' since December 2020. The agriculture ministry said the animals were unfit for further travel and could not be re-imported into the European Union, meaning they must be isolated and killed in the coming days. A report by government veterinarians uploaded to animal-rights group Igualdad Animal’s website said 179 cows on the 'Elbeik' had died during the journey and were thrown overboard. Several of the remaining animals were malnourished and dehydrated, while some were barely conscious after being crammed into unsanitary pens without room to lie down.

Inspection continued

Mon Mar 22 12:18:36 CET 2021 Timsen

The inspection and testing of the 1,800 cattle carried by the 'Elbeik' was continued on March 20. Technicians from the General Directorate of Animal Health, dependent on the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, got back on the ship docked in Escombreras to continue the cargo control work. Meanwhile, work began to assemble the device in case the cattle have to be lowered for their hypothetical slaughter, if so determined by the veterinary reports. Ministry workers, with the help of the Port of Cartagena, began to place containers parallel to the wall of the southwest dike as a temporary cage for the cattle. It was the same maneuver that they carried out when they decided to slaughter the 880 calves of the 'Karim Allah'- The owners of the animals were waiting to verify that the animals were healthy and that they dod not have the blue tongue disease to be allowed to return them to Libya. There, they assured, they have the commitment of a client who he will buy them and the permission of the authorities to let them enter the country.
