Capsized boat salvaged by ISI
Inland Salvage Inc. has completed the salvage of the capsized "Elwood Jones" near the Huey P. Long Bridge in New Orleans. The boat had capsized at approximately 3.30 p.m. on September 30, 2011, and was lying partially submerged in approximately 15 feet of water near the vessel owner's fleet. Immediately upon being notified by the vessel's assured and underwriters that Inland Salvage Inc. had been appointed as the salvor, ISI responded to the capsized M/V "Elwood Jones" by quickly mobilizing equipment and personnel, including the 500t D/B "Big Al" and 400t D/B "LMB" to the casualty site. ISI personnel and equipment arrived at the casualty site within two hours. First the wreck was parbuckled, than dewatered and the mud washed down to restore buoyancy and stability. Finally the vessel was returned to the Owners safely afloat without incident 48 hours after arrival on site. Daily safety and job task meetings were conducted to insure that all participants in the salvage and pollution response were aware and prepared for the daily activities.
Elwood partially submerged
Coast Guard and parish officials were responding to the "Elwood Jones" after it partially submerged on the Mississippi River, a short distance from the Huey P. Long Bridge. The vessel began taking on water around 3:30 p.m. on Sep 30. 2011, at mile marker 106, roughly half a mile upriver from the bridge. The boat has 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel onboard, but apparently none of that has leaked into the river at this point. An oil response firm has been called to the scene, as a precaution, to join military and civil emergency responders already there. The semi-submerged vessel was not posing a navigational hazard at this time, and river traffic had not to be halted.
