Ship barred off in Nijkerk for phosphine

Fri Dec 13 18:43:17 CET 2019 Timsen

The 'Energie', 606 ts (EU-No.: 03110564), has been banned from sailing since one week in the port of Nijkerk. The toxic substance phosphine was measured on board. The SZW Inspectorate, the former Labour Inspectorate, confirms this on Dec 13, 2019. The substances are measured in the cargo hold. The ship has been barred off since Dec 5 with a warning on the ship not to come on board. Work on the ship can now be resumed. According to the Inspectorate SZW, the measurement report showed that the situation was safe again. The ship was loaded in the Amsterdam port with sunflower pellets from the Ukraine. The phosphine has been released from the load. According to the inspection, five more ships have been shut down for the same reason. Phosphine, also known as hydrogen phosphorus or hydrogen phosphide, is a phosphorus compound, a colorless, flammable and highly toxic gas. It is used for, among other things, decontamination and pest control. For example, it is in rat poison. Exposure to too high concentrations of phosphine can, among other things, cause breathlessness and arrhythmias.
