Pirate mother ship captured by EUNAVFOR vessel
On April 23, 2019, boarding team of the ESPS "Navarra" has captured five Somali pirates after they had hijacked the dhow "Al Azham" and used it as a mother ship for attacks on several ships off the East African coast during the recent days. On April 19 they attacked and hijacked the dhow off the Somali coast, and took the 23 crew members as hostages. The pirates used the dhow as a mother ship for several attacks. First they attacked the South Korean fishing vessel "Adria" 280 miles off the Somali coast on April 21, 2019. The "Adria" quickly got assistance by the Spanish fishing vessel "Txori Argi", and armed guards on board both fishing vessels managed to repel the attack. Later that day, another fishing vessel, the "Shin Shuen Far 889", was attacked by the pirates who were also defended by armed guards. During the Easter weekend, an EU Navforce observation aircraft managed to identify the dhow with the pirates on board, and directed the Spanish warship to the position. A boarding team from the warship was sent to the dhow, and the pirates surrendered without a fight, and the 23 crew members were freed.
