Europa towed to Mannheim

Sat Nov 04 18:22:41 CET 2017 Timsen

After the water ingress at the propeller shaft of the "Europa" was stopped in the night, on Nov 4 the "Europa", 2647 ts (EU-No.: 04809120), was taken alongside the Belgian tank barge "Theodela MTS" (MMSI: 205415190), which had come from Tolkamer, and under tow of a pusher tug to Mannheim where the ethanol cargo will be unloaded before the shp may enter a yard for repairs. The barge berthed in Mannheim on Nov 5 at 11.40 a.m. After unloading she proceeded to Werkendam for repairs. She arrived there on Nov 9 and sailed again on Nov 17 at 7 p.m., next being bound to Duisburg via Rotterdam, where she berthed on Nov 19.

Water ingress on the Rhine

Fri Nov 03 20:44:47 CET 2017 Timsen

On Nov 3, 2017, the "Europa", 2647 ts (EU-No.: 04809120), suffered water ingress on the Rhine underneath the Betteck at river km 553,500. The ship, which was sailing river upstream from Duisburg to Mannheim, was loaded with 1.350 tons ethanol (UN 1170) and had suffered water ingress after it had to stop to let other traffic pass. The engine had failed when the ship tried to resume sailing, and strange noises were remarked by the crew which found out that the propeller shaft had moved and water was intruding the engine room. A pusher tug which was by chance nearby moved it out of the fairway and secured it. The water ingress could not be controlled with own means, and the fire brigade was alerted. The "Europa" was moved out of the traffic zone between Oberwesel and St. Goar and was held by the work boat "Rheinland" (MMS: 211510040) in position at river km 549,900 off Oberwesel where the propeller shaft was to be fixed by a contracted comppany so that the leak could be patched. Otherwise the cargo would have to be lightered. The ship had previously been in a Dutch yard, and it was thought that improper work there was responsible for the accident.
