Merchant vessels assisted in rescue of yacht crew

Wed Sep 07 11:32:15 CEST 2022 Timsen

The tankers 'Ionic Artemis' and 'Fairchem Aldebaran' were diverted to assist two sailors aboard the distressed sailing yacht 'Aviva', which was battling severe weather in the Tasman Sea, on Sep 6, 2022. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority co-ordinated the rescue with assistance from the Royal Australian Airforce and NSW Police. THe AMSA was advised by a family member of the crew that the yacht, Aviva, had been damaged and began taking on water when it encountered 10-metre seas and high winds in the Tasman Sea. The two men aboard, aged in their 70s, activated an emergency beacon on Sep 5 at around 5 a.m. The AMSA responded with its Melbourne-based challenger rescue aircraft which established radio communication with the crew on board the vessel. The Australian Defence Force responded with multiple RAAF aircraft, to ensure continued communication and observation of the vessel. In the afternoon of Sep 6, the vessel was around 164 nautical miles east of Lord Howe Island. The NSW Police vessel 'Nemesis' arrived at the scene at 11 p.m. and rescued the two crew members and took them to Sydney, via Lord Howe Island. The AMSA thanedk the'Nemesis', the merchant vessels and the Australian Defence Force for their assistance with the rescue.
