Trawler grounded off Battery Rocks
The 'Fredwood-MT 338' ran aground just off the shore near Battery Rocks, Penzance, with five crew members on board on Aug 10, 2021. At 6.57 a.m. the lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ was tasked to launch by the Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre. The 'Ivan Ellen' sped across the bay and was quickly on scene. The crew immediately assessed the situation, and due to the fact that the tide was dropping, a tow rope was attached to the trawler. The lifeboat then pulled the scalloper clear of the rocks. The trawler was towed to deeper water to the east of Penzance where a full examination of the vessel was carried out by the crew. The Ivan Ellen remained on standby with salvage pumps at the ready. Investigation into sinking launched
An investigation has been launched after the "Fredwood" sank in Maryport harbour on Apr 6. The Marine Accidents Investigation Branch was investigating the causes and circumstances of the sinking. The Fredwood is an Annan-registered boat which fishes from the Cumbrian port during the winter months. After the sinking, a crane winched the boat upright and the skipper, David McClennan, had to wait for low tide, at about 6 p.m. for the crew to pump out seawater and check the hull for damage. It is believed a fixing on the hull may have been pushed through creating a hole for the water to get in.
Fishing vessel sank in Maryport
Four people have been rescued from the sinking "Fredwood - BA 338" at the Marine Road in Maryport on Apr 6, 2016, at 08:30 a.m. after the crew reported the trawler was listing. They had landed their catch in the evening, and the ship was still moored up when it began to be swamped by the incoming tide. Firefighters attended and used a ladder to help the crew safely leave the vessel. Some of the crew returned at low tide to help with the salvage. Lifeboat volunteers from the RNLI Workington and Maryport helped the crew recover items floating off the vessel which was completely submerged during high tide. A crane winched the vessel upright and about 6 p.m. the crew could pump out the seawater and check the hull for damage. The pumps were supplied by Maryport Rescue, Workington lifeboat and a local hire facility in the afternoon, and work was ongoing to patch the vessel ahead of the next tide so she floats before being slipped. It is believed a fixing on the hull may have been pushed through, creating a hole for the water to get in. The Maryport Inshore Rescue remained on site into the afternoon retrieving life rafts and other debris that had floated from the vessel.
