Fishing vessel seized

Wed Dec 06 12:28:49 CET 2017 Timsen

The Indonesian Maritime and Fisheries Monitoring Task Force (PSDKP) seized the "Fu Yuan Yu 831" on Nov 29, 2017, which entered the exclusive zone in the Timor Sea. Besides the East Timor flag, investigators found five other national flags on board — of Malaysia, China, the Philippines, Indonesia and Singapore. The crew was suspected of using these national flags as well, which is forbidden by international law. Approximately 35 tons of fish, including hundreds of protected tiger sharks, were in the fish holds of the vessel which is owned by the Chinese fishing company Fuzhou Hongdong Pelagic Fishery. The 15 fishermen from China, Myanmar and Vietnam were taken into custody along with their vessel which was being held at Tenau fishing port in Alak district, Kupang, since the evening of Dec 1. The 15 fishermen were part of a 21-member crew, six of whom are from Indonesia. Nine of the foreign fishermen were from China, three were Vietnamese, while the other three were from Myanmar. The vessel had sailed without the proper documents. Their documents stated that they were from Timor Leste. The "Yu Yuan Yu 381" is known to have been operating around Dili, Timor Leste as one of three foreign vessels often stealing fish in Indonesian waters.
