Deadly accident in Gulf of Aden

Thu Aug 23 11:09:42 CEST 2012 Timsen

The Norfolk-based guided missile destroyer "Winston S. Churchill - DDG 81" came to the aid of the "Belde" near Yemen on Aug 20, 2012, after its crew had a cargo-handling accident. One of the ship's crew members was killed in the accident and another required advanced medical care. Members of the visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) team aboard the guided missile destroyer Winston headed towards the bulk carrier in response to the medical-related distress call in the Gulf of Aden. The destroyer crew conducted a medical evaluation, hoisted the injured crew member aboard a SH-60B Seahawk helicopter assigned to Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron Light (HSL) 42, Det. 8 and transported him to a hospital in Oman for treatment. The "Winston S. Churchill" was conducting counterterrorism and maritime security operations in the Middle East.
