Skippper died during attempted net recovery

Tue May 30 10:28:34 CEST 2017 Timsen

Mads Nielsen, the skipper of the "Ida Camilla - AS341", 128 gt (IMO: 8996487), died on May 28, 2017, while the ship was fishing on Horns Rev. After a line of the net was broken, the catch could not be recovered. The skipper therefore put on a wetsuit and the diving equipment and jumped into the water to resolve the matter. On his way out, however, he started feeling unwell and tried to return onto the ship. But before he was back, he became unconscious, and the crew immediately secured him with a rope and tried to get him back on board as quickly as possible. However, the rescue attempts did not succeed immediately. Emergency calls were issued to colleagues in the same area. The fishing vessels "Karinette - RI275" and "Annie Nielsen - RI 372" were close to the "Ida Camilla". Both ships recovered their nets as fast as possible and sent help to save the lifeless skipper. One crew member of the "Annie Nielsen" came on board of the "Ida Camilla" to assist in the rescue. The entire crew then managed to get the skipper back on board, and immediately they tried to resuscitate him. A rescue helicopter from Skrydstrup had been alerted too and arrived on scene shortly after the skipper was recovered. He was hoisted soon after and flown directly to the hospital in Odense. However, Mads Nielsen was declared dead later in the day. The other ships in the area helped to recover the nets from the disabled "Ida Camilla" which then headed to Hvide Sande. The man who boarded from the "Annie Nielsen" guided the "Ida Camilla" to Hvide Sande to support the highly shocked crew which was offered emergency medical assistance once the ship was safe in port. b
