Crew of sinking cargo ship rescued by Indonesian force

Tue Feb 04 18:55:47 CET 2020 Timsen

Rescue forces of the Kamla Central Maritime Zone in Serei, together with KSOP of Munte Port and Basarnas Munte came to the rescue of the 12 people aboard the ÄGraha Angkasa I' on Feb 3, 2020. The ship had suffered water ingress in stormy weather around 9 p.m. and went adrift following an engine breakdown following a flooding of the engine room in the waters of Serei, North Minahasa, North Sulawesi. At 9 p.m. the Bakamla Base of the Indonesian Armed Forces received the request from the KSOP of Munte Port and Basarnas Munte to evacuate the crew, which consisted of 9 crew members, and three cadets. From the Bakamla Fleet Base immediately the KN 'Gajah Laut - 404' and KN 'Singa Laut - 402' were mobilized and started taking off the sailors with RHIB and rubber lifeboats. The evacuation process was quite difficult because of very heavy rainfall, accompanied by high waves and minimal light. However, at 10.45 p.m. the entire crew was taken off without any injuries or casualties. The KM 'Graha Angkasa I' with its cement cargo of approximately 3,000 tons later sank. The rescued crew members were taken to the Munte Syahbandar Office for further treatment.
