Master misjudged height of bridge

Sat Dec 14 16:16:44 CET 2019 Timsen

The master of the 'Grendel' which had, coming from Antwerp, allided with the Sint Servaas-brige near Maastricht, had misjudged its height after having passed a number of bridges on the Maas before. The ship lost its wheelhouse, the bridge got away with slight damage. The tanker was ballasting but had carried toxic cargo before and was not yet degassed. It remained detained until this has been done in Maastricht and will only be allowed the passage to a yard later.

Allision on the Maas

Wed Dec 11 22:13:25 CET 2019 Timsen

The 'Grendel', coming from Antwerp, allided with the Sint Servaas bridge on the Maas in Maastricht on Dec 11, 2019. One crew member was injured. The wheelhouse was severely damaged. The ship was docked after the accident. The Servaas Bridge was not raised, the skipper may therefore have made a mistake in his estimation. The bridge was opened for a while for inspections by Rijkswaterstaat. The bridge has now been lowered again. Shipping was not affected by the allision.
