Ferry assisted in salvage operation

Coast Guard Station Surigao personnel together with the crew of the “GT Express 1” rendered assistance to the 264 passengers and 20 crew members onboard the ropax ferry “Maria Oliva”, 1411 gt, after she encountered engine trouble off Agusan Del Norte on Apr 1, 2017 at 7:20 p.m. Wilfredo Maguilimoton, Operation Marshal of the Montenegro Shipping Lines Inc. appeared at the Coast Guard Station Surigao, reported the inciden and requested rescue assistance. Upon receipt of the report, CGS Surigao personnel immediately coordinated with thhe “GT Express 1” which was bound to Surigao City for a joint rescue mission. On Apr 2 at 3:36 a.m. an SAR team of the Philippine Coastguard boarded the “Maria Oliva” and conducted towing and relief operations. The ship was safely docked at the port of Lipata, Surigao Del Norte. Furthermore, the SAR team assisted the City Government of Surigao in the distribution of food packs to the rescued passengers.
