HNLMS TROMP

Wed May 11 15:41:44 CEST 2011 arnekiel

On 5 May, the Dutch frigate HNLMS Tromp, at about 10 miles off the Somali coast, arrested a whaler carrying 4 men, possibly pirates. Following the destruction of their boat, the suspects were taken on board the frigate to be interviewed. One day later, the men were dropped off in a dinghy near the Somali coast. Last Wednesday, a Spanish maritime patrol aircraft had spotted the whaler carrying fourteen oil drums and accompanied by a skiff. The NATO CTF 508 commander, Commodore Michiel Hijmans, subsequently ordered HNLMS Tromp to track the group down. Later that day, HNLMS Tromp’s on-board Lynx helicopter discovered the whaler with the four men. By then, the skiff had made itself scarce. HNLMS Tromp, using its own fast motorboats (RHIBS) and the special Marine Corps unit, subsequently detained the whaler and took the men on board.

The HNLMS "Tromp" has once again picked up Somali pirates and disarmed them. The pirates attacked the Dutch naval ship in two boats. They headed towards HNLMS "Tromp" at full speed in the belief that they were approaching a merchant ship. When they realised they were in fact about to attack a naval ship they aborted the attack. The Dutch naval ship forced the fleeing pirates to stop by firing warning shots. The two pirate boats were destroyed and the pirates were put in a third boat so that they could return to the coast. Earlier this month, other pirates mistook HNLMS Tromp for a freight ship.

Dutch ship sweeps pirates from Indian Ocean. This week, the Dutch frigate HNLMS Tromp forced Somali pirates, who had been preying on ships in the far corners of the Indian Ocean, to scatter in all directions. The Tromp intercepted three groups of pirates in a region known as the ‘Somali Basin’. http://www.rnw.nl/english/article/dutch-ship-sweeps-pirates-indian-ocean
