Fishing vessel sunk as artificial reef
On Jan 21, 2021, the 'John S. Dempster' Jr' was sunk as an artifial reef in the Atlantic Ocean on the Del-Jersey-Land Inshore Reef which is about 26 miles from Lewes, Cape May, and Ocean City, and made up of decommissioned vessels. DNREC says the artificial reef attracts more fish and brings more fishing opportunities to the area. The mainstay of the reef is the destroyer ex-USS 'Arthur W. Radford'. The 568-foot ship is the longest reefed on the East Coast and was sunk in 2011. In 2017, the patrol boat 'Tamaroa' was sunk. In 2018, a retired ferry joined the reef too. The 'John S. Dempster Jr" is one of three other decommissioned World War II-era fast-supply (FS) ships that DNREC has turned into prime fish habitat.
