Man evacuated from ore ship 'Joseph L. Block' after leaving Two Harbors

Wed Oct 10 10:54:09 CEST 2012 arnekiel

The Coast Guard reported Tuesday night, Oct. 9, 2012 that it aided in a medical evacuation of a 45-year-old crewman Tuesday afternoon from the ship Joseph L. Block after it left Two Harbors on Monday loaded with iron ore. According to the Coast Guard, the 728-foot vessel was 30 miles east of Copper Harbor, Mich., and the Keweenaw Peninsula on Lake Superior when the man, who wasn’t named, reported tightness in his chest and difficulty breathing. A Coast Guard search-and-rescue coordinator in Sault Sainte Marie, Mich., got word of the man’s medical condition about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, and it was determined that he should be evacuated from the ship. The Joseph L. Block crew was instructed to chart closer to Marquette, Mich., and a Coast Guard boat met the ship at 2:25 p.m. when the ship was 1.5 miles from shore there. Medical teams were waiting at the Coast Guard station in Marquette. The man was listed as stable by medical staff.
