Bulkcarrier grounded off Virginia Beach

Fri Jan 11 09:24:14 CET 2019 Timsen

The Coast Guard assisted the crew of the "JSW Salem" after it ran aground about 2,5 miles east of Virginia Beach in the morning of Jan 10, 2019, while enroute from Baltimore to Inixy, India. The bulk carrier contacted Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads watchstanders in Portsmouth after the ship ran aground near Cape Henry Buoy #4 with a cargo of 120,000 tons of coal and a crew of 26 on board. A 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Little Creek launched and arrived on scene to assist. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, also launched to conduct an overflight of the scene. The "JSW Salem" was able to refloat with the rising tide and the RB-M crew escorted the ship to an anchorage about one mile off Virginia Beach. The cause of the grounding was being investigated by the Coast Guard. Report with photo: https://coastguardnews.com/coast-guard-assists-aground-cargo-ship-near-virginia-beach-va/2019/01/10/
