Lifeboats assisted Keila in towing disabled trawler

Tue Jan 24 11:17:26 CET 2012 Timsen

On Jan 20, 2012, the Whitby RNLI lifeboat assisted the "Keila" which was towing the disabled trawler "Noronya" from Stromness for repairs at Whitby Parkol following mechanical failures on the "Noronya". The decision was made to launch both Whitby’s all weather lifeboat "George and Mary Webb" and the inshore lifeboat "OEM Stone III" at 12.33 p.m. to assist in bringing the trawlers safely into Whitby harbour. The Whitby Pilot vessel "St Hilda" of Whitby also launched to assist with the Harbour Master on board. Whitby’s all weather lifeboat arrived on scene at 12.47 p.m. and guided the trawlers into the harbour whilst the inshore lifeboat was on hand to better position the disabled trawler. The pilot boat connected a stern line to the trawler to steady the tow taking into account the worsening weather and ensured the safe arrival of the two trawlers into Whitby harbour. The vessel was then towed to Whitby Parkol where it was moored along side the dry dock with the assistance of Whitby’s inshore lifeboat.
