Death of ferry passenger investigated

Thu Aug 31 13:21:20 CEST 2023 Timsen

An inquiry into ‘involuntary homicide (manslaughter)’ has been opened in Bastia after a passenger of the 'MEga Andrea' died after his car fell into the sea on the evening of Aug 28. According to early reports, the vehicle took a wrong turn, which caused it to fall into the water. The inquiry will focus on the safety conditions that were in place around the disembarkment of the vessel. The ferry, had left Toulon and had been due to dock at L'Île-Rousse and also in Haute-Corse, Corsica, but changed course to Bastia due to strong winds and heavy rain. Three passengers were inside the vehicle when it fell along with the 70-year old driver; a 65-year-old man and two women: one aged 60 and another aged 70. They were saved from the car by two workers from the port management group Chambre de commerce et d'industrie de Corse (CCI), and one agent from security company Hestia. Around 20 firefighters later helped to recover the deceased from the water. The CCI de Corse cooperate dactively with the judicial inquiry to shed light on the circumstances of the accident and has also opened an internal investigation into what happened, and has also provided a psychological support team for those affected by the accident, in partnership with the Haute-Corse prefecture.

Passenger died in Bastia after disembarked vehicle fell into port basin

Tue Aug 29 10:30:42 CEST 2023 Timsen

A passenger died after disembarking with a vehicle from the 'Mega Andrea' on 29, 2023, at around 1 a.m. in the port of Bastia. The car with four passengers fell in the port basin. The victim was found inside the cabin, the other three people, slightly injured, were saved. The vehicle had disembarked from the boat located on the southernmost berth towards the Quai des Martyrs and was heading towards the exit of the port when it fell into thewater in front of the station terminal. The emergency services were alerted by port employees of the Corsican Chamber of Commerce and employees of the security company, who attended the scene. After calling the fire brigade, they jumped into the water to try to help the passengers. Thanks to their efficiency, three people were able to be extracted from the vehicle, two women and a man, aged around 60. The operation was extremely difficult given the weather conditions with gusts of wind and heavy rain. Once arrived, the firefighters engaged heavy means to try to extract the fourth man stuck in the cabin with lifeboat, three vehicles, divers and a doctor, but could not save his life. The ferry had arrived from Toulon at 12.40 a.m. and left the port again at 2.30 a.m. en route to Nice.
