All 43 people rescued from sinking catamaran ferry
In a major SAR operation, involving several vessels, all 43 passengers and crew members were safely evacuated from the ' Melita', which was sinking off Croatia’s coast, after being damaged by waves, causing a hull crack, on June 16, 2025, at around 10 p.m., minutes before it was due to enter the port of Zadar. Water entered the hull, prompting an immediate response from the ferry 'Jadran' and a boat from the Zadar Port Authority. 38 passengers and five crew members were aboard the catamaran at the time. The quick reaction of the crew and the captain, who was the last to leave the ship, prevented any casualties. The passengers and crew were evacuated onto a raft, which was towed by the Port Authority vessel to the Jadran, where they were taken aboard and transported safely to the nearby port of Gazenica. Some returned immediately home, others were taken to the hospital undergoing examination.
