Freighter abandoned after fire
On June 30, 2015, at 7 p.m. a fire broke out in the engine room of the "Meratus Sembawa 1" which was anchored off Madura Island about 20 miles north of Surabaya in East Java. The fire spread and engulfed the superstructure, the 19 crew members were rescued by vessels passing the Jamuang Reef. The firehe which was caused by an electrical short circuit in the engine room, was put out by three tugs. The vessel was en route from Maumere on Flores Island to Surabaya.
