Ship safe in port
The "MSC Katina" berthed at Eurogate in Hamburg on Nov 20, at 11.30 p.m. Here the damaged container from cargo hold 2 and, as a precaution, some more in its surroundings, were unloaded onto the quay. The ship had reached the Elbe in the afternoon, after the Container had been successfully flooded at 3.45 p.m., and was escorted to port by fire fighting forces where 40 firefighters were already in attendance. Fire in container extinguished
The fire in a container with charcoal aboard the "MSC Katrina" could be extinguished on Nov 20 at 3.45 p.m. by fire fighters with rebreathers who opened it. The temperature kept being measured constantly while the crew was preparing the further voyage to Hamburg. Four firefighters and one doctor were remaining on board as a precaution until the ship has reached Hamburg, all other units were released in the evening. The ship was being expected in port late in the evening.
Fire in cargo in Elbe estuary
In at least one container aboard the "MSC Katrina" which was enroute from Antwerp to Hamburg a fire was detected in the Elbe estuary at 3.49 a.m. The ship accident command center in Cuxhaven was alerted short past 9 a.m. Seven more containers with CO2. The lifeboat "Herman Helms“ and a helicopter transported additional rescue forces from Cuxhaven to the ship in order to flood the area. A helicopter medevaced two injured crew members. On board were 26 crew members and two pilots. The captain was advised to proceed to a position SW of Heligoland. The anti pollution vessel "Neuwerk" attended.Upload News
