Cargo ship detained after collision

Tue Nov 22 11:50:18 CET 2016 Timsen

The local authorities in Surabaya detained the "Tay Son 4" and its crew of 22 as part of an ongoing investigation into the collision between the ship and the "Mulya Sejati". A team of marine inspectors at Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya was deployed on Nov 21 to conduct an inspection of the vessel. The team boarded the ship to check its seaworthiness in accordance with the standard operating procedures of international shipping. The investigation would also determine the legal status of the captain as well as the ship. The police had not yet taken any legal action against the captain as the full authority for accidents at sea lay with the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT). A number of family members of the victims went to Koesma Tuban Regional Hospital on Nov 21 to identify the three bodies found at the scene of the accident. However, none of the victims could be identified as a result of the damage to the bodies. The "Mulya Sejati" with a crew of 27 was reportedly hit from astern by the "Tay Son 4" in Tuban waters in the early hours of Nov 19. Apart from the three known fatalities 12 crew members remained missing, while 12 were rescued. The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), Muhamamd Arifin was intensifying the search for the missing crew members. Basarnas has deployed a ship and helicopter in the search area which was up to 20 nautical miles from the point of collision.

The collision of the "Tay Son 4" and the "Mulya Sejati" left three people dead and 12 others missing, Indonesia’s SAR agency said on Nov 20. The "Mulya Sejati", which was carrying 27 people, collided with the cargo ship on Nov 19 before dawn and capsized after being hit in the stern. The freighter was now being moored in Lamongan town for investigation. The ship, loaded with tapioca flour, was reportedly heading to Tanjung Perak seaport in East Java’s capital, Surabaya. 12 survivors were rescued and rushed to a hospital for examination. In the afternoon of Nov 20, rescuers discovered three bodies by the stern of the wreck which was floating in the sea bottom up. A search for the missing was underway with the help of the navy, which deployed two warships to join a helicopter from BASARNAS.
