Barge in danger of sinking in Weurt

Sun Oct 16 13:00:47 CEST 2016 Timsen

The "Nautrans", 1185 ts (EU-No.: 06004246), partially sank within the lock complex in Weurt on Oct 16, 2016. She was loaded with limestone at the time of the accident, and the bow sank to the bottom of the Maas-Waal Canal. Before the sinking, the ship had touched the bottom twice in Nijmegen due to the low water level. The master noted that water entered the ship, and he alerted Rijkswaterstaat, which advised him to proceed to the lock complex at Weurt where the ship could be dealt with outside the fairway. The fire rescue was alerted at 9:18 a.m. and attended with a fireboat. They were trying to pump out the water. After this failed, a salvor was called to patch the leak. Also the cargo had to be unloaded, and dewatering work was continued. It was likely to take several hours to stabilize the ship. On scene were the tug "Flumar" (MMSI-No.: 244710579) and the patrol boat "RWS 27". After the ship was patched up, the "Flumar" pulled it back to Nijmegen where she docked at the Weurt West Canal on Oct 17 at 8 a.m. Dutch reports with photos and video: http://www.gelderlander.nl/regio/wijchen-beuningen/beuningen/video-lek-schip-zinkt-gedeeltelijk-bij-sluiscomplex-weurt-1.6534762 http://www.omroepgelderland.nl/nieuws/2118896/Lek-vrachtschip-loopt-vast-op-Maas-Waalkanaal-bij-Nijmegen http://www.ad.nl/binnenland/schip-in-nood-op-maas-waalkanaal~a2832454/
