Ferry suffered major damage

Fri Oct 25 10:24:08 CEST 2019 Timsen

The 'Neptunus' suffered major damage in the capsize of the floating dock of Øresund Drydock in Landskrona when it hit the dock's interior on Oct 21. The Swedish Transport Administration on Oct 24 stated that the work on securing the ferry in the dock was continuing. Only when it has been finished the dock can be dewatered and repairs to the 'Neptunus' commence. The ferry suffered extensive damage to propeller units, machines and electrical systems, both as a result of the blow to the inside of the dock and due to water ingress in the engine room. Only when the shipping company and insurance companies have done a final inspection, the precise amount of the damage and an estimate how long the repairs can take, can be done.

Ferry extensively damaged in dock capsize

Mon Oct 21 21:20:18 CEST 2019 Timsen

In the morning of Oct 21, 2019 a floating dock of the Öresund Drydocks in Landskrona with the 'Neptunus', 977 gt, which usually sails on the Gullmarsleden between Uddevalla and Lysekil, inside capsized following a power outage which caused the pumps ins the dock to stop.. The cause of the failure was unknown to date. Oil absorbants were laid out by the rescue services following a minor oil spill. The tugs 'Svitzer' and 'Svitzer Bjorn' were called in the run of the day trying to straighten the dock. During the afternoon, the Swedish Transport Administration announced that the ferry of the Swedish Transport Administration had suffered extensive damage. Propellers and electronic equipment were damaged. The Swedish Transport Administration has two spare propellers that can replace the damaged ones, but manufacturing new ones takes almost a year. The 'Gullbritt' will replace the ferry for the time being. Already in a storm in autumn 2011 the dock had an accident when it broke from its moorings and drifted across the Lundakrab Bay south of the shipyard before running aground in a shallow bay.
