Fire at Geertman Shipyard in Zwartsluis

In the night of Oct 9, 2017, a fire broke out aboard the "Neiuwe Zorg" on the slope at Shipyard Geertman in Zwartsluis. During the day, welding work had been undertaken to insert some hull plates between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. The owner held firewatch until 6.30 p.m., finished another last round and then went home. But by 7 p.m. neighbours saw smoke emerging from the ship and alerted the fire rescue. The fire brigades from Zwartsluis and Hasselt were soon on scene and tackled the fire which, however, caused significant damage. To get access, the fire rescue had to break off wooden panels.
