Barge refloated and towed to yard
The "Noorderlicht" was towed to a repair Yard on Aug 19. The ship had been loaded to one third with sand the previous day, the captain saw that the engine room was flooded and alerted the emergency services before he gathered his family and made it to shore. The fire department put pumps in the engine room and managed to seal off the engine room. The crane barge "Hebbes" of FBT Salvors in Druten and a tug were called to Amerongen. The fire department made sure that the ship did not sink further, and with capapble pumps the salvors were able to drain the engine room and patch the leak. Then a part of the sand cargo was lightered onto the "Cascade" so that the "Noorderlicht" could be refloated. It was then found out that the cabin rooms were halfways dry, as the have new windows could Keep up with the pressure of the water outside, so that only the engine room flooded. Sand barge partially sunk on Rhine
On the Rhine at lock between Amerongen and Laurik the "Noorderlicht" partially sank on Aug 18, 2014, around midday. The fire rescue from Tiel, the police launch "P 98" and the "RWS 44" of Rijkswaterstaat were on scene to assist the vessel which was involved in dredging works. The "Batouwe" of the fire rescue tried to dewater the vessel, while another was called to lighter the cargo of sand. A diver tried to patch the leak. Small amounts of oil had leaked out. The partial sinking was caused by a broken exhaust pipe in the engine room. While the bow was still above the water, the aft was submerged. In the afternoon a leak sail was pulled over the leakage, and the Situation was so far reported as stable. Next it would be attempted dewater the hold with pumps before towing the vessel to a yard.
