Water ingress in Schlüttsiel

Sun May 03 19:22:40 CEST 2026 Timsen

On April 30, 2026 at 11:28 a.m. the Bredstedt Fire Department was mobilised to the port of Schlüttsiel along with the Ockholm Fire Department, after the crew of the 'Nordlicht' had discovered a water ingress of unknown origin. They started own pumping attempts and made an emergency call. Also the lifeboat"Ernst Meier-Hedde" from the DGzRS station in Amrum and the water police attended. The fire fighters assisted with continuous pumping operations, as a temporary seal of the leak was initially not possible. Due to the potential contamination of the pumped water with pollutants, a technical advisor from the THW (Federal Agency for Technical Relief) Niebüll was also alerted, but their services were not needed as the response progressed. After approximately 1,5 hours, the situation was handed over to the water police and the lifeboat, which took over the pumping operations. All measures were carried out in coordination with the LKN.SH (State Agency for Coastal Protection, National Park and Marine Conservation Schleswig-Holstein), the responsible coastal protection authority. The trawler left Schlüttsiel on May 1 and berthed in its homeport Greetsiel on May 2. Water ingress off Borkum

Wed Jul 29 21:51:56 CEST 2015 Timsen

On July 29, 2015, at 2 a.m. the "Nordlicht" radioed a Mayday after having suffered water ingress in the engine room which could not be controlled by the two fishermen aboard. The engine failed, and the ship went adrift 1,5 miles west of Borkum island in the Ems fairway. Bremen Rescue Radio alerted the lifeboat "Alfried Krupp" from Borkum which managed to take the ship in tow in winds of 5 Beaufort and wave heights of 1,5 meters. They took the vessel alongside and transferred dewatering pumps aboard with which the water Ingress could be controlled. Then the "Nordlicht" was towed into the port of Borkum.
