Nets on aft well alight
Phil Parsonage, skipper of the "Bon Accord - BM 367", rushed to tackle a fire on board the trawler "Ocean Spirit - BM 493", 30 gt, which was berthed by the pontoon in Shepherd's Wharf in Plymouth in the afternoon of June 10, 2015. His crewman Sean Bradford alerted him to the fire after seeing smoke billowing out of the fishing boat in Sutton Harbour when he was walking round the harbour and saw it smoking. They headed round to the side of the ship, kept on the windward side so the smoke was going the other way and put the wash on it to stem the fire until the fire brigade got there and managed to put it out. The crew tackled the fire for about 15 minutes. The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said crews were alerted at around 3.10 p.m. Crews from Greenbank, Crownhill, Camels Head, together with the fire boat from Plymstock were dispatched and found the Trawler to be well alight. There was a very strong wind in the harbour and flames were blowing out of the back of the "Ocean Spirits". It was not yet known what caused the fire but the nets on board were rumoured to have caught alight in the hot sunshine. Two of the boat's nets were badly damaged in the fire which would cost £2,000 to £3,000 to replace. The fire was confined to the port side net, which was stored on an overhead drum. Trawler saved in force nine gale
The "Isle of Lewis" stood by as the Stornoway RNLI-lifeboat crew battled a force nine gale to rescue the "Ocean Spirit". Also another fishing vessel, the "Carlsbay", went to the assistance of the ship after it began taking on water 10 miles south east of the town in the afternoon of Mar 7, 2015. Hundreds of passengers aboard the CalMac ferry watched as the lifeboat fought four-metre waves to reach the trawler. The ferry remained on site during the rescue after responding to the boat's mayday until the situation was under control.
