Unloading operations interrupted

Fri Dec 12 19:13:41 CET 2025 Timsen

The wind and rain brought by Storm Emilia to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria forced the suspension of unloading operations on the containers of the 'One Continuity' on Dec 12. The dockworkers at La Luz resumed work at 8 a.m. despite the incessant rain, after having removed a total of 20 cargo containers from the vessel on the first day. The port workers had planned to finish the task during the morning, but the wind and rain made it impossible to guarantee the safety of the workers who had to release and secure each container while suspended in the basket of a crane at a great height. Therefore, Boluda, the company that operates the terminal at the Virgen del Pino Wharf in the Port of Las Palmas, decided to suspend operations, which will resume on Dec 14. Once the containers in the most critical condition and at greatest risk of falling had been unloaded, the dock workers could work at a faster pace. In just the three and a half hours they were working on Dec 12, they were able to remove and stack 14 containers. At the same time, on Dec 11, they were only able to secure four, those that were most in danger of falling to the edge of the dock. Loss of 45 containers off Canary Islands

Thu Dec 11 12:37:53 CET 2025 Timsen

The "One Continuity", en route from Le Havre to China, has lost 45 containers south of the Canary Islands off Maspalomas in stormy weather, and more containers were crushed under the weight of the others. Between Gran Canaria and Tenerife, the captain decided to temporarily halt the voyage and declared an emergency. Several stacks of containers were leaning to starboard, raising concerns that they might fall too. After circling off Tenerife, the vessel turned around and docked at the Boluda terminal at the Virgen del Pino Wharf, loaded with more than 16,000 containers. in the La Luz container port of Gran Canaria on the morning of Dec 10, 2025. Ten rows of containers at the stern of the freighter had toppled over due to high waves. At the shipowner's request, an aerial inspection was carried out using drones to assess the overall condition of the vessel and its perimeter. A study was then conducted to determine the best alternatives for stabilising the containers. The delicate operation to unload the containers and reattach them to the ship started on Dec 11 at 8:00 a.m. It required the preparation of a prior safety plan. After obtaining all the necessary permits, a total of eight people were assigned to this task, which will required meticulous work from the air. It was a complicated maneuver because some of the containers were hanging in the air and there were bent support bars that required the intervention of welders. For this, a team of eight stevedores specialising in this type of maneuver carried out the work suspended in the baskets of a crane. Following this, the partially damaged moorings will be repaired. The Port of Las Palmas is prepared to offer this service to shipping companies that suffer this type of accident. Although it is a very dangerous procedure, La Luz has a team of specialized stevedores who can carry out such operations successfully, Reports with photos and video: https://www.puentedemando.com/boluda-terminals-asiste-la-emergencia-del-buque-one-continuity-en-el-puerto-de-las-palmas/ https://rtvc.es/comienzan-estabilizar-contenedores-one-continuity-puerto-luz-11-diciembre-2025/ https://www.laprovincia.es/las-palmas/2025/12/10/atraque-riesgo-puerto-palmas-124627310.html https://www.atlanticohoy.com/palmas/que-hay-interior-contenedores-mar-megabuque-one-continuity-las-palmas_1554860_102.html https://cadenaser.com/canarias/2025/12/10/el-puerto-de-la-luz-asiste-al-buque-one-continuity-para-desestibar-su-carga-con-seguridad-ser-las-palmas/
