Osiris saved two distressed Golden Globe participants

Tue Sep 25 11:08:41 CEST 2018 Timsen

Four days after he was seriously injured and stranded in the Golden Globe race, Abhilash Tomy of the Indian Navy was rescued on Sep 24, 2018, by the "Osiris", which had responded to an SOS from a massive joint operation launched by Indian and Australian authorities since the past three days. He was rescued with two zodiacs launched from the vessel. The sailor was caught in a huge storm on Sep 21, 5,020 km from Cape Comorin, India and 3,500 km from Perth, Australia, in the Indian Ocean. His yacht "Thuriya" overturned while he was virtually left paralysed with severe back injuries but managed to relay messages to various authorities from his satphone. Also the Irish race partticipant Gregor McGuckin abandoned his yacht "Hanley Energy Endurance" was was taken aboard the "Osiris". The ketch had capsized in the same storm and lost both masts. McGuckin erected a jury rig and headed towards the "Thuriya" to assist too. Though he was not injured, he decided it was safer to abandon ship once the rescue was near. He was taken aboard 57 miles south of Saint Paul island at 4.15 p.m. Reports with photos: https://segelreporter.com/regatta/golden-globe-race-tomy-und-mcguckin-in-sicherheit-die-fotos-der-rettungsaktion/ http://www.ipreunion.com/actualites-reunion/reportage/2018/09/25/sauvetage-du-skipper-indien-naufrage-osiris-des-photos-etonnantes-de-la-recuperation,91159.html https://www.newsx.com/national/golden-globe-race-commander-abhilash-tomy-rescue-operation-indian-navy
