Fishing vessel got propeller fouled

Thu Dec 19 10:30:49 CET 2019 Timsen

The 'Pen Glas' (62 gt, built 1960) suffered a fouled propeller about 14,8 miles southeast of Selsey Bill and its crew was unable to remove the obstruction on Dec 18, 2019, at 1 a.m. The vessel contacted its owner, requesting to be towed to Portsmouth, while adrift in the south west traffic lane 22 miles south east of Selsey Bill. The ALB launched at 1.56 a.m. and made best speed to the position arriving on scene at 3.05 a.m. The weather on scene was wind southerly force 4, sea state slight in a clear sky. The fishing vessel reported all four crew on board were well and ready to accept the tow line. At 3.16 a.m. a tow was established between the lifeboat and the fishing vessel and a course was set towards Portsmouth Harbour. Whilst the tow continued the skipper of the fishing boat arranged for another fishing boat to rendezvous with the lifeboat approximately one mile west of the Looe channel buoys to take over the tow from the lifeboat. At 8.30 a.m. the tow was released and at 8.40am the lifeboat departed the scene to return to Selsey. The lifeboat returned to Selsey at 9.00 a.m. and was rehoused washed down and refuelled ready for the next call by 10.30 a.m. At 12.40 p.m. the 'Pen Glas' was berthed in Old Portsmouth port. Fishing vessel disabled off Salcombe

Thu Jun 30 11:26:43 CEST 2016 Timsen

The Salcombe RNLI rescued the "Pen Glas" on June 26, 2016, after its propeller was fouled in some discarded debris. The all-weather lifeboat "The Baltic Exchange III" launched at 8.24 a.m. to the fishing vessel which was disabled 20 miles south of Salcombe. The local fishing vessel "Emma Jane" had started to tow the "Pen Glas" towards Salcombe and so the lifeboat met them 16 miles south of Salcombe to take over the tow and bring the stricken fishing vessel back into Salcombe. Once the tow was handed over, the "Emma Jane" was able to head back out to sea to continue her trip. Approaching the Salcombe bar there were a large number of yachts and pleasure craft leaving Salcombe and with a 185 meter tow between the lifeboat and the fishing vessel, the harbour authority were called to keep other vessels clear of both boats and to make sure no vessels passed between the boats. Once off the yacht club, the towing wire to the "Pen Glas" was shortened and placed alongside the all-weather lifeboat so that she could be safely taken around to the fish quay where a diver would be able to cut the debris away.
