ASDP Launches Indonesia’s Largest RoRo Ship "KMP Port Link" in Sunda Strait

Mon Jun 10 10:03:12 CEST 2013 arnekiel

The state-owned River and Lake Transportation Company (PT ASDP) has launched the country’s largest roll-on/roll-off ferry, which will link Java and Sumatra via Merak, Banten, and Bakauheni, Lampung. The 123-meter-long KMP Portlink, formerly operated by Stena Line in Ireland, has a capacity to carry 1,000 passengers, 309 cars and 62 trucks at a speed of up to 19 knots, or about 36 kilometers per hour. Danang S. Baskoro, the president director of ASDP, said that the ferry had been operating the route on a trial basis since May 15 but that the company was ready to officially open the new service. “Of course we are relieved and thankful that KMP Portlink can now operate after a very long process and a lot of challenges,” Danang said. Built in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the 12.619-ton Portlink, which used to be named Stena Caledonia, served the Belfast-Stranraer route between the Northern Irish capital and Scotland.
